Critical Thinking Media Competence

FOX News

I think everyone heard of Fox Broadcasting Company. You can hear it everywhere , on TV or on radio.

At first, I want to do introduce some basic facts about this television network. It is an American commercial broadcasting television network that is owned by the Fox Entertainment Group. Launched on October 9, 1986 as a fourth television network, Fox went on to become the highest-rated broadcast network in the 18–49 demographic from 2004 to 2012 and the 2007–08 season was the most-watched network in the United States. The network is named after sister company 20th Century Fox, and indirectly for producer William Fox, who founded one of the movie studio's predecessors, Fox Film ( source Wikipedia).

On which type of news FOX is concentrated ?

Well, From my experience watching news , when I hear about FOX news , always  comes presidential debates or national election coverage on my mind. But FOX does not only concentrates on political news or debates, they also “provide national and international news reports for local Fox stations.” Those international and national news include also political news within a country as well as some political news from abroad. as well as some weather forecasts or some travelling news and so on.

But now , I want to concentrate on critics about this channel and not only about this channel as well as some famous politicians who “ don’t really like, what is shown by FOX news about them” and how those politicians react. Here where the play begins!

I made some research and found quite lots critical news which was made by FOX NEWS about some famous american politicians . Here,  I found one of the famous conflict  between  Barack Obama and FOX News. At first I want to introduce You some facts , which I found interesting even though they are all taken from Wikipedia source , and at the end I just want to discuss a little bit about it.

Conflict with Barack Obama

On September 20, 2009, President Obama appeared on all the major news programs except Fox News, a snub partially in response to remarks about the President by commentators Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity and general coverage by Fox with regard to Obama's Health Care proposal. Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace called White House administration officials "crybabies" in response. Following this, a senior Obama adviser told U.S. News that the White House would never get a fair shake from Fox News ( wikipedia source)

In late September 2009 Obama senior advisor David Axelrod and Roger Ailes met in secret to try to smooth out tensions between the two camps without much success. Two weeks later, White House officials referred to FNC as “not a news network", communications director Anita Dunn asserting that “Fox News often operates as either the research arm or the communications arm of the Republican Party. President Obama followed with "If media is operating basically as a talk radio format, then that's one thing, and if it's operating as a news outlet, then that's another." Within days it was reported that Fox had been excluded from an interview with administration official Ken Feinberg, with bureau chiefs from the White House Pool (ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN) coming to the defense of Fox.On November 8, 2009 the Los Angeles Times reported that an unnamed Democratic consultant was warned by the White House not to appear on Fox News again. President Obama doesn’t like any type of critics. Some rulers like : Vladimir Putin or Angela Merkel more less can deal with some critics about his/her politics so they can handle it and even make from such a  discussion a good debate as well as staying, providing  and proving his/ her point of view.  Social media , newspapers , TV  or any type of media  have a right to “seek for the truth” or ask some difficult questions, which can lead to a discussion with politician ,  FROM which public can see exact point of view otherwise if not media, but WHO can ask such questions? and deliver information about current situation to public?

From my point of view both sides - Politicians and Media can change each other or influence. It is sort of a “bridge” between politicians and public and the games which Mass Media is doing now, for example establishing some foolish facts about a conflict in Ukraine, are very dangerous! Which can change lot of things not in a good way and those can affect lots of countries!

The role of media

It has a huge role nowadays. First of all media is entertainment isn’t it?

TV, radio, Newspapers, magazines and books - such entertainment can have political function in presenting one's’ point of view.

Secondly - the type of delivering an information , it can be done by different ways, for example,

Informing - What? when? who? facts

Analyzing - saying what does it mean…

Influencing - trying to view certain situation in a certain way.

Providing political forum - especially when there are some political elections. this is an advantage for politicians

Making profit - Media outlets are businesses.

So, the question. maybe politicians should be afraid of Mass media? Maybe Obama is  being afraid of some critics from Mass Media due to their  influence on public and he realizes that actually most people don’t support him ( for example , Iraq war). Those thoughts lead us to think more deeply into another topic...
